Audience

College students and adult learners who need to strengthen their self‑regulated learning skills to succeed in online, hybrid, and self‑paced learning environments.

Overview:
Sticky Skills was a learning experience design module developed as part of my Design-Based Research capstone project at WGU. The focus was to introduce college students to several key learning skills while giving them opportunities to practice one of those skills, active recall (aka retrieval practice).

Challenge:
Students transitioning from heavily scaffolded K-12 schooling to the much more self-directed college experience often find themselves unprepared for the challenge of regulating their learning.

Solution:
This course introduces students to several fundamental learning skills needed to be effective in college, while giving opportunities to apply a key skill, active recall.

Impact:
The module increased learner understanding and performance during the capstone research study and highlighted key areas to improve future iterations of the module.
